New YouTube Video: Android Lollipop - When Will You Get It?

Here are some early hands-on images with the Nexus 9 (video)

The Nexus 9 launched yesterday and by now you’ve probably seen a ton of press images and renders. But there’s nothing like real, honest hands-on images of a device to make an impression of its look and feel.

The well-connected folks from Vietnamese website Tinhte have got their hands on a beautiful Nexus 9 tablet and some of its accessories and put them through an impromptu photo-shoot.

The Nexus 9 will be available in black, white, and tan, with all versions offering a soft touch back, a slim profile, and brushed metal frames. The device is under 8 millimeter in thickness, and relatively light at 425 grams (Wi-Fi version). Few will deny that Google and HTC did a smashing job here, mixing the no-frills charm previous Nexus devices were known for with a dose of HTC-infused elegance.

With that, we’ll leave the images do talking.

One (M8) with Lollipop spotted in Bluetooth docs, as HTC promises speedy updates

HTC was one of the several Android OEMs that promised speedy updates to Android L. Like OnePlus, HTC said it would rollout Lollipop to most devices in its roster within 90 days.

If a filing in the Bluetooth SIG database is any indication, HTC is already hard at work testing and adapting Lollipop to the One (M8).

As spotted by G4Games, the filing is for a device with the code number 0P6BXXX, which in the past has been associated with HTC’s flagship. The document, which clearly mentions Android 5.0, was filed just before the official launch of Lollipop yesterday, and made public today.

To be clear, this listing doesn’t necessarily mean that the big Lollipop update to the HTC One (M8) is imminent. It’s just an encouraging sign that HTC is going to keep its promise, at a time when speedy updates are a must-have for many Android users. The fact that HTC had early access to Android 5.0 thanks to its collaboration to Google for the Nexus 9 is another positive sign that HTC users won’t be left far behind their Nexus-toting brethren.

After the launch of Lollipop yesterday, HTC confirmed on Twitter that it would bring Lollipop within 90 days to its 2013 and 2014 lineup. This includes the M8 and M7 hero devices, but also smaller players like the 2013 One Mini, which was specifically confirmed by HTC.

Besides HTC and OnePlus, Motorola also laid out its plans for the Lollipop jump, and we expect other OEMs to do the same over the next days and weeks.

Nexus 7 (2012) will also officially see Android 5.0 Lollipop

When Android 4.4 KitKat arrived on scene, we saw the Galaxy Nexus left out of the party, though unofficial efforts eventually brought the OS to the handset nonetheless. So now that Android 5.0 Lollipop is on its way out, you might be wondering if any Nexus devices will see their retirement this year.
Initially, Google’s announcement post only revealed the OS would arrive for the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 10 and GPe devices. Thankfully since then we’ve learned that theNexus 4 will also be included, and now it seems that the Nexus 7 (2012) isn’t being left out either. Part of the appeal of the Nexus family has been the promise of long-term, quick updates so it’s good to see Google keeping its promise for owners of the (little over) two year-old tablet.
For Nexus 7 (2012) owners, will the arrival of Lollipop be enough to keep you satisfied for a while longer, or are you considering upgrading to a newer tablet? Perhaps the Nexus 9?

Possible European prices of Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 leak out

Caschys Blog, a source with several solid leaks to its name, published screenshots purportedly showing the German prices of Nexus 6 and Nexus 9, as well as their storage configurations.

The screenshots allegedly show the internal inventory systems of German electronics retailer Media Markt/Saturn, and as such should not be taken as official word. Still, the prices don’t seem too far-fetched and given their source, we tend to trust their accuracy.

It’s important to note that Media Markt’s prices of the 2013 Nexus 5 were around 50 euro higher than on Google’s Play Store, so it’s likely that the prices listed here are higher as well.

Also, European prices are typically higher than prices in the US in converted dollars. For instance, the Nexus 5 16GB is 349 euro ($440) in Germany and $349 in the US.

With these words of caution out of the way, here’s the good stuff:

Nexus 6 prices

  • Nexus 6 32GB Black: 569 euro
  • Nexus 6 32GB White: 569 euro
  • Nexus 6 64GB Black: 649 euro
  • Nexus 6 64GB White: 649 euro

If this leak is accurate, Nexus smartphones will be available with 64GB of storage for the first time. Also, it’s good to see Google moving away from the 16GB option, which is inadequate for most users these days.

Nexus 9 prices

Nexus 9 LTE 32GB Black: 569 euro
Nexus 9 LTE 32GB White: 569 euro
Nexus 9 WiFi 32GB Black: 489 euro
Nexus 9 WiFi 32GB White: 489 euro
Nexus 9 WiFi 16GB Black: 399 euro
Nexus 9 WiFi 16GB White: 399 euro
Assuming that our assumptions are correct (1 euro = 1 dollar, prices are 50 euros higher than in the Play Store), the Nexus 6 could start from about $500 in the US, while the Nexus 9 could start from around $350.

Note 4 already arriving for some lucky T-mobile customers

The Galaxy Note 4 isn’t supposed to launch on T-Mobile’s network officially until October 16th, but a number of lucky T-Mobile customers are actually already starting to receive their pre-ordered Note 4 handsets ahead of schedule.
While T-Mobile has yet to comment on the situation, there are numerous forum and blog posts around the web confirming that the phone is arriving to uncarrier subscribers, or at the very least they have received emails stating the phone has shipped. Unfortunately for those on other US networks, there haven’t been any reports of the device shipping early just yet.

Still, if you pre-ordered the Note 4 from any US carrier, it might not hurt to start checking your email a bit more regularly over the coming days For those that have already received the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, what do you think of the handset so far? Be sure to let us know in the comments, or share your thoughts in more detail via our forums.

Android L powered Nexus 9 tablet will reportedly launch tomorrow

Given the animated adverts that popped up earlier, it seems that Google is on the verge of releasing its new Nexus devices. According to a source close to Google, the HTC designed Nexus 9 is scheduled to launch tomorrow and will be the first device to ship running Android L.
While we are used to big launch events, Google will apparently forgo the typical fanfare as it is still tweaking its upcoming Android L operating system. Instead, the reveal will take place via a simple blog post tomorrow, along with the launch of a new smartphone from Motorola, in other words the Nexus 6.
The source also reaffirms many of the rumoured specifications for the new Nexus tablet. Including the 8.9 inch 2048×1440 display, a 64-bit NVidia processor and Kepler GPU, and 8MP rear facing and 3MP front facing cameras. The new tablet will also benefit from HTC’s work with Boomsound, as it will feature two front facing speakers. There is also mention of a brushed aluminium frame, rather than a solid metal design.
The Nexus 9 is said to go up for pre-order on the 17th of October, and will be available for purchase on November 3rd. While this seems like a large delay, it would give Google time to put some extra polish on Android L.
The 16GB Nexus 9 is expected to retail for $399, while the 32GB variant, which also has LTE, will cost $499.  Google is also reportedly going to sell a magnetic stand-case as an accessory for the tablet.

Paranoid Android 4.6 Beta 2 polishes colorful system bars

After a few weeks of silence, Paranoid Android is back with a long delayed beta number 2 of their upcoming PA 4.6 release. As with previous beta release for the PA 4.5 series, this one gives due emphasis to one thing: getting the new and colorful Dynamic System Bars in tip-top shape.

Paranoid Android introduced the new feature, abbreviated to DSB, early this month. This is part of Paranoid Android's attempt to bring a pinch of Material Design to its users even before Android L takes flight. The DSBs change the colors of the status bar and the navigation panel to match that of the app's color scheme, blending seamlessly into the app and presenting a stronger "paper-like" aesthetic.

Pretty as that may seem, the first iteration of the feature was unsurprisingly rough around the edges and consumed too much battery and resources. Beta 2 addresses some of those concerns, particularly the jittery animation and lag that users might experience when enabling DSB. That said, the developers note that there is still some battery drain, but not as bad as Beta 1's consumption. Hopefully they will be able to iron that out completely as well in future releases.

Unfortunately, those future releases might start to come a bit slower. Seasons are changing and developers are starting to get bogged down by life. In particular, the summer development craziness we have enjoyed previously is practically over. Of course, PA development will go on but fans and curious observers might have to practice a bit of patience when waiting for what will happen next and when.

iPhone 6 Bend Test + HTC One M8, Moto X, Others

What's hotter than a new Apple iPhone? A new Apple iPhonethat bends! Unbox Therapy returns with a larger set of smartphones across different manufacturers to test, even an older Nokia Lumia, just to prove that not everything bends to the forces of nature, or your hands, or your thighs, so easily as the iPhone 6 Plus.

It's only reasonable to put the smaller iPhone 6 to the same torture as its bigger sibling. And it is somewhat also reasonable to expect that it won't be so quick to yield, which is what this new test video proves. Though presumably made of the same materials and with the same meticulous care that Apple is so famous for, the iPhone 6 barely budged. The theory is that because it is smaller, it is more compact and therefore less susceptible to bending. But then again, the Galaxy Note 3 is actually larger than even the iPhone 6 Plus and yet it fared better than Apple's first phablet.

One device that immediately came to mind when #bendgate started was the HTC One M8, because of its similar aluminum material and unibody design. It's 5.0-inch screen also sits somewhere in between the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. That said, HTC's 2014 flagship would not budge. Well, not entirely. It was amusing to note that the screen bulged out a bit where the force was being applied but went back to normal afterwards.

The real winner of this batch, however, is the completely newMoto X. Though also with an aluminum frame, Motorola's latest masterpiece was noted to be impossible to bend with bare hands. No creak, no sound, no movement, no bulge. A solid piece of slab that attests to Motorola's attention to quality which will hopefully carry on even under Lenovo's flag.

For kicks, Unbox Therapy threw in a Nokia smartphone, particularly a Lumia 1020. Nokia's devices have long been the center of praise and jokes for being tough and rugged, though its Lumia line still has to be put to the test. The Lumia 1020, in particular, has a 41 megapixel PureView camera which might make your presume it has some very sensitive and fragile components inside. Lo and behold, aside from an initial movement of the screen, the Lumia 1020 proved that Nokia still has it. Or had it, rather. Let's see if Microsoft will be able to keep that tradition going
